School Meals & Food in School

Food in School

School meals are managed and provided jointly by Sunnymede Infant and Junior Schools through the Junior School kitchen. Children may choose meals on a day to day basis and may swap between packed lunch or school dinner.  We recommend that you look through the menu and discuss what is on offer with your child. Please make sure you remind your child what choice they are each day.  We are a Healthy School and proactively encourage children to make healthy choices. The school meals menu is nutritionally balanced across the week to ensure that children receive all the elements for a healthy diet.

Throughout the school children learn about the importance of food and healthy choices and take part in cookery sessions. All children are provided with a fruit/vegetable snack during the morning break as part of the national fruit and vegetable scheme. Children should not bring their own snack.  A full Food Policy is available via the School Office. The Headteacher has responsibility for overseeing all matters connected to food in school. Please note that nut products and sweets/chocolates are not allowed in lunchboxes.

Healthy and Happy

According to NHS Choices a balanced lunchbox should contain:

  • Starchy foods like bread, rice, potatoes or pasta
  • Protein foods like meat, fish, eggs or beans
  • A dairy item, like cheese or yogurt
  • Vegetables or salad and a portion of fruit

There are a few items which ask you not to put in lunchboxes:

  • Nuts
  • Sweets or Chocolates
  • Tube yoghurts.  Pot yoghurts are fine - please don't forget a spoon.
  • Cheese strings - children tend to play with these. Cheese chunks or slices are fine.
