Reading at Sunnymede

At Sunnymede we use a synthetic phonic approach to reading. This means that children learn the phonemes (or letter sounds) to read words. We use the national Letters and Sounds scheme to teach phonics and we also use Jolly Phonics songs and rhymes as  an additional stimulus.

Our reading books are organised into colour bands and include decodable reading books alongside a range of poetry, plays and comic style books which include fiction and non-fiction.  Children are also encouraged to develop their love of reading and pursue their reading interests through a weekly library session where they are able to choose a book to bring home.

Below you can find further information on the key skills learnt at each reading level and the teaching order for letters and sounds.
