Our Sponsored child Lekina

Sunnymede’s International involvements

At Sunnymede we recognise the importance of raising our pupils  awareness of other cultures around the world, and aim to encourage respect, and a caring attitude towards others, through experiencing the richness of cultural diversity both within our own community and beyond.

SPONSORED CHILD
LEKINA SARITON
We are proud to sponsor a Child called Lekina Sariton, who lives in Elangata Wuas at the Southern tip of the Rift Valley bordering Tanzania in Kenya.
We have regular correspondence to Lekina and his village. There is a large display area in the school explaining all about Lekina and his life.

CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE
In December 2013 we took part in the Christmas card exchange, with countries across Europe. Sending and receiving cards from France, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Latvia, Romania and Norway
 AFRICAN ARTS WEEK
In March 2013 the whole school took part in African Arts week. A week of learning and fun where children engage in first hand experiences involving a culture different from their own.
The week focuses around workshops in dance and music led by visiting artists.
Children also take part in art, cookery, textile and storytelling activities all related to Africa.
We aim to provide intercultural aspects to most of the learning activities we give to the children, but having a multicultural week allows us to bring it into sharper focus in a way which involves the whole community, is fun and first hand learning for the children.
