English at Sunnymede
At Sunnymede Infant School we use the Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics and reading. As children quickly develop their knowledge of letter sounds they apply this to spelling words and writing. We link writing in the English lessons to the reading book the children are working on so that they can spell and write confidently in a range of styles. Literacy vocabulary
Developing vocabulary supports learning across the curriculum in many ways. Through our curriculum we introduce children to a variety of words. Some of these are subject specific words, for example carnivore (meaning meat eater) in Science, and some are more general words which might be introduced through the reading of good quality fiction texts, discussion or video clips.
