English at Sunnymede

At Sunnymede Infant School we use the Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics and reading. As children quickly develop their knowledge of letter sounds they apply this to spelling words and writing. We link writing in the English lessons to the reading book the children are working on so that they can spell and write confidently in a range of styles. You can find out lots more about Read Write Inc by clicking the link below.

Developing vocabulary supports learning across the curriculum in many ways. Through our curriculum we introduce children to a variety of words. Some of these are subject specific words, for example carnivore (meaning meat eater) in Science,  and some are more general words which might be introduced through the reading of good quality fiction texts, discussion or video clips.

Alongside this we are also promoting a Word of the Week in Year 1 and Year 2. These are words which may not occur so frequently in texts or everyday spoken language which extend pupil's ability to explain and communicate in a variety of ways.

The Words of the Week for the Spring and Summer terms 2020 are below. You may like to talk about these with your child and try using them!
